For the hungry to
learn just how do you prove theorems (how do you start, what do you put
in, what do you leave out, and how do you know when you have finished),
this course is a desire of your heart. Logic is taught to be used
with understanding on how to prove set theory theorems. Logic for
Understanding Mathematics is a college level math course. It is
critical for a student to have this understanding of how to prove as
they transition from problem working courses to theorem proving courses.
A sound math student in high school could take this their senior year
and go into college math courses with proof understanding few would
have.
Dr. Austin French teaches using an overhead so you can watch him teach while looking at his freely provided notes. You'll find that the DVDs are very helpful in explaining the notes line upon line. His "no note taking " methods greatly benefit the educational targets (the students) and have won him top student evaluations at Georgetown College in KY. LOGIC FOR UNDERSTANDING MATHEMATICS COURSE This learning system consists of the textbook, a supplementary materials book that contains many problems worked in detail, practice tests and real tests with answer keys and a set of DVDs with 31 teaching sessions. See the TABLE of CONTENTS for specific subjects covered by this course. **web authors note: I found Dr French's courses easy to follow and understandable even though I have been out of school for 20+ yrs and didn't have all the requirements (except a math aptitude).

Dr. Austin French's Logic and
Understanding in Mathematics is a great course for students in both areas of
mathematics and computer science. His no-note-taking style of textbook
creates a prime atmosphere for anyone to fully learn the topics of discrete
mathematics. But, the course is much
more than just a semester's worth of math. Dr. French adds many
"truth nuggets" along the way that shed some light on how to grasp the
coursework using tips from the Bible and Dr. French's own personal experience.
His "truth nuggets" are hard to forget, and these tips still help me
in ANY course I take and in basically any facet of life. I recommend his textbook
series to anyone who wants to learn about these areas of math, or anyone who
wants to learn to be a better thinker and a better person (and learn a little
bit of math too). J.C. Hodgenville, KY Georgetown College |
